Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach

It’s the beginning of the my great travel adventure around Australia. Early departure from Brisbane bus terminal on a Greyhound bus to Rainbow Beach (access point to Fraser Island). Australia is such a huge country that the bus was stopping in most touristic areas for loading and unloading backpackers. Thus – the trip took all day. I tried to writing a travel diary, but it is definitely not easy at all when it’s for the first time and the beginning of travel. Rainbow Beach is a small town beside the sea where the main business appears to be tourism, given the number of backpackers chilling around. The landscape is beautiful (I’ll repeat that pretty often I believe), especially the forest trail that heads south to Noosa (which can can be done in a couples of days).

After I arrived at Dingo’s – The Backpacker partner of Peter Pan, I joined the group of people present for a long briefing on the do’s and don’t on Fraser Island (including what to do when you face a wild dingo). After that we ordered all the alcohol needed for this 3 day trip. My group consists of four Irish, one Israeli and two Dutch. In the other 4 × 4, a group of nice British girls, Germans and one French.
First evening of the trip – not much to do, the backpackers’ bar and pool are empty. I tried to write a bit in my travel diary before going to bed early, but nothing much to say after only a day of bus ride.

Australia in 29 days

Australia in 29 days

After spending five months as a student in Brisbane, I decided to splurge and enjoy my last month in this wonderful country, discovering the richness of its natural wonders. (the Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of nature).

I was not sure where to go or with whom to leave. I only had in mind the famous Ayers Rock or the Great Barrier Reef, but no specific itinerary and I had the choice to travel alone or with some friends from the university who also wanted to travel in Australia.

Finally, I decided that I will travel alone – mainly for the freedom to travel anywhere I want with the budget which suits me, something that is far from easy when travelling as a group (and which can become a real-brainer, after having experienced it). I had the choice between scheduling everything in advance or just plan on a daily basis. The problem is that I only had one month to see as many wonders of Australia, so planning my trip on a daily basis was not practical, especially for transportation (including the flight that was much more expensive if booked at the last moment). Thus, to book everything in advance was the best choice as i can plan and spend within my budget when travelling.

Once the decision was made, I headed to the very much recommended Peter Pan (a travel agency for young people, especially backpackers). I arrived at the place; and as i ascended the stairs, the Reggae, Electro, Club music was blasting off the stereo and pictures of extraordinary landscapes seemed to be promising me a good vacation on the way. As i got up to the office, there were plenty of young people who use computers to go online. The business seems to be working well. I sat, a cute tanned blonde lady with the friendliest smile attended to me. I told her what i was looking for – one month travel, with maximum of stuff to do and see on an average budget. She took a calendar of July, and began proposing PeterPan’s holiday packages by following a route on the map of Australia on the table. Apparently we will go up the east coast, stopping a few times, and then flew to Darwin, some adventures in the outback, then another flight, a mountain, another coast, a few days in one of the largest cities and a final flight returning to Brisbane.

It sounded pretty good. We made some adjustments, one more free day here, one less there … I liked it, I told her I’m good, she checked to see if my plan was indeed feasible and showed me the final itinerary. Perfect! I paid my deposit and was to come a week later to have time to make reservations and to pay for the rest.

A week later I had my final itinerary (and a lot less money in my account). The route was:

  • 3 days 4×4 and Camping on Fraser Island
  • 3 days cruising in the Islands Whitesundays
  • 3 days in Cairns with a day of diving in the Great Barrier Reef
  • Flight Cairns – Darwin
  • 9 days between Darwin and Alice Springs 3 days Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks, three days journey Darwin – Alice Springs, 3 days Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon
  • Flights Alice Springs – Adelaide
  • 3 days Great Ocean Road and Grampians
  • 3 days with one day Melbourne to Philip Island
  • Flight Melbourne – Brisbane

Greyhound bus ride between points and backpackers accommodation (Hostels ala Australian).

This was a month full of adrenaline pumping feelings, excitement, exhaustion, meeting people and discovering beautiful scenery … Was definitely one of the best experiences of my life!

The difficult relationship between Hong Kong people and mainland Chinese

The ad

On the February 1st, people in Hong Kong presented an advertisement covering one full page in a well circulated local newspaper, severely criticizing mainland Chinese on taking advantage of the system in Hong Kong. The necessary funds (100 000 HKD, or 10,000 euros) for the ad were obtained in a week with the aid of social networks.
The main argument was focused on the issue of mainland Chinese women coming to Hong Kong to give birth. Reason being their children can obtain citizenship and all the benefits which come along with it. In 2011, 40 000 Chinese women came to give birth in Hong Kong, not a very bright situation when hospitals are already struggling to meet the locals’ demand.
The ad depict a locust at the top of a cliff overlooking Hong Kong which says ” Hong Kong people, we have endured enough in silence”

Australian Bus Boss gives 15 million dollars to employees

Among the news in Asia Pacific that does not made it into the headlines in Europe was a surprising story. The boss of an Australian bus company sold his business for 400 million Australian dollars and gave 20 million to the employees. The workers were suddenly rewarded between 8500$ to 100000$ for their hard work and loyalty. Everyone has been pleasantly surprised by the move.

Mount Tamborine

Mount Tamborine

Got onto a small car ride towards Mount Tamborine, a mountain located about 80 km from Brisbane. It’s more of a big hill than a mountain with a steep ascent which proved quite enough for our little small car. The peak of this big hill is flat and surprisingly large, enough to accommodate a population of 5000 inhabitants and several schools. The place is quite touristy, especially the main street which is lined with shops and art galleries. The main tourist activity here – hiking in the rainforest.

After a hike, it’s time for lunch. In Australia, barbecue or rather ‘Barbie’ is a local thing to do. Just because we are not at home, it doesn’t mean that we can not enjoy it. Our portable barbie pit served us simple but quite filling lunch!

It was a green and pleasant day, away from the city… what a bliss!

Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast

Any self-respecting person who went to Brisbane, would have also been to the Gold Coast. This place is the fastest access to the beach from Brisbane. The Gold Coast is actually the city that stretches along the beach (about 40 km long) and Surfers Paradise is a neighborhood in it, boasting one of the most famous beaches in Australia. Gold Coast is the fastest growing city in Australia and is one of the main location for tourism (about 10 million tourists a year) in Queensland.
From Brisbane, we got up early to catch the train from Southbank Station heading towards Surfers Paradise. The journey takes 1.20 hours. Once at Nerang Station, we take the bus to Surfers Paradise. It takes roughly 2 hours from Brisbane to reach the beach. Once there, you will realize the vastness of the beach, endless on both sides …
The Beach is so long that the areas monitored by lifeguards are spaced every 500 meters. I went several times there in 5 months and have seen the differences between the waves in summer and winter. In summer the waves are huge and one can get a nasty good slap if not careful. At the contrary, in winter, the waves are ridiculously small.

Surfers Paradise is aptly named and is really great for fun time in the waves, bodyboarding or surfing! By day, it offers relaxing moments basking under the sunshine, enrolling in a surfing lesson offered by the many professionals charging by hour or day or just renting a surfboard from the shops nearby and try em’ out . By night, Surfers Paradise reveals its facade of nightlife – world class rated pubs, night clubs and strip clubs, of which i have yet to explore…
